How It All Began...

I found out I had a food intolerances in an odd way. I was living in Florida at the time and had been happily eating whatever I wanted. After a bout of severe irritable bowel and anxiety issues I decided something had to be done. On the recommendation of a friend, I went to see a Naturopathic Dr. I took what was called a Carroll Test and, lo and behold, it came back that I was intolerant to Dairy, Soy and Sugar. The Dr. told me to removed all those items from my diet and eventually my body would heal itself.
It's been three years of altering recipes so I don't feel like I miss out on all my old favourites. Along the way, I've spoken to many people who have these same intolerances. I couldn't find anywhere with recipes that were already altered so this is for anyone else with similar intolerances that still has a love of food like I do!
Let the adventure in the kitchen begin!

Where to go...

The first grocery shopping trip my husband and I did, after finding out about my intolerances, took about four hours because we would read the ingredients off of almost every item looking for something that would make life a little easier. I love to cook but it's very time consuming. With the help of my family and friends I've been able to find and compile a decent list of everyday items. Here is a list of places and food items that I've found work for me. Most of these can be found in the natural section of the stores but some are regular items. I would suggest always checking the ingredient lists on these items but for me and my food intolerances ( dairy, soy and sugar) they work.

Sobey's
*BBQ Sauce- Hunny Bunny
*Ketchup-Hunny Bunny
*Vanilla or Original Rice Dream Rice Milk ( although I think Superstore sells it cheaper unless its on sale at Sobeys)
*Honeybar snack bars- they come in apple cinnamon or peanut ( I think there might be some other flavors but those are my favs)
*Maple Sugar (to bake with) can be found in the produce section -the the maple section... this can also be bought at the Acadian Maple Farms factory out by peggys cove. You get more for a cheaper price. I think its worth the drive if you bake alot. This can be very expensive!
*R.W Knudsen Spritzer- My fav is grape but they come in all kinds of flavors. Its a great treat when you are craving something like pop but can't have it!
*Sobeys Our Compliments natural roasted red pepper hummus! YUM-O! My fav!
*Rustic Garlic Loaf- it is a sobeys brand but its so good!
*Natures Path Fruit Juice Sweetened Corn Flakes- you can buy these in two sizes the bag is better cost wise and again this is another item that you can buy cheaper (usually) at Super Store.
*Chips- Ruffles/Lays make natural chips. Its not hard to miss them because they are labeled at NATURAL.
*Tostitos- natural yellow corn chip
*Salsa-this is their organic brand
*Oasis Juice-very tasty and many different flavors. Great to add to fruit smoothies.
*McCain french fries-crinkle cut ( could be other cuts too, I haven't checked)
*Jam- St Dalfour. Lots and Lots of flavors.
*Becel RSF butter ( this has .02% soybean oil but I've found that it doesn't bother me)

Super Store-
*Barbaras Multigrain Cereal Bars-They come in three flavors and have been a staple in my life.
*Rice Dream Rice milk
*Cereal- Superstore brand Naturals 7 Reasons. Very tasty!
*Cereal-Natures Path Fruit Juice Sweetened Corn Flakes
*PC Blue Menu fruit fizzy drinks. They come in 4 flavors and again a good treat.
*PC Blue Menu Tomatoe and Basil sphagetti sauce
*Becel RSF butter ( this has .02% soybean oil but I've found that it doesn't bother me)

Pete's Frootique
Pete's has a few of the items mentioned above so just check while your there
* Carrs crackers
*Sorbet- I think its called Solo fruit... check the ingredients ... but its super tasty and was great throughout the summer.

Whole Foods
* Rice Twice Cereal
*Coconut Dream Ice Cream- Pretty Awesome!
*Jam- St Dalfour

I'm sure there are other items out there but these are the ones I find I buy frequently. I'm always on the lookout for new items. It seems more and people are developping these intolerances so hopefully more things will be made for us!:)

Margeson Bread- A staple in my life!

Margeson Bread is a recipe that my grandmother gave me when she found out I couldn't have sugar. Most bread has sugar in it and this one uses honey! Its so tasty, especially right out of the oven! I've made it so many times I could probably make it with my eyes closed!

Margeson Bread
2 C Warm Water
1/4 C Honey
2 TBSP of oil ( I prefer a canola-olive oil mix)

3 C of Whole Wheat Flour
2 C of All Purpose Flour
pinch of salt
1 package of quick rise yeast

Directions:
*Add first three ingredients in a bowl. Stir honey around so it is absorbed by the water.
*Add all dry ingredients in a separate bowl.
* Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix together until you have a well formed ball.
*Knead this ball for a good 5-10 minutes. Put ball back into bowl.
* Cover this bowl and let it rise for 1 hour.
*Take dough ball back out of bowl and transfer into greased pans.
*Let rise.( The time depends on you. I usually try to go for another half hour- hour... I get a little impatient at this point)
*Bake at 350 degrees F for about 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
*Remove from oven and let cool. Enjoy the tasty goodness!

This recipe will make two loaves of yummy bread!
